Born in Mombasa to a Gujarati family. Came to England in 1972 to study, stayed to marry.

Ran a corner shop in Ilford for thirty-five years. Eventually two shops, both still in the family.
A founding trustee of the local mosque. Drove minibuses for the Sunday school for as long as he had a licence.
